Brief Karate History
Karate (pronounced "kah-rah-teh") is a martial art that originated in China. It is an art of fighting that uses all limbs of the body for both attack and defense. It is a competitive sport that has evolved into many styles and is arguably Japan's largest cultural export.

Gichin Funakoshi - "the Father of Modern Karate"
(b. November 10, 1868 - d. April 26, 1957)
Funakoshi is the founder of Shotokan karate and was a student of both Anko Asato (1827 - 1906) and Anko Itosu (1831 - 1915).
Funakoshi is credited with establishing the Japan Karate Association (JKA), the largest martial arts organization on the planet.
